This house built in 1885 by Jacob Ross and the Ross brothers is a mixture of the Classic form and Gothic Revival details. An architectural design of this type apparently suited the climate in that the roofs are steeply pitched to handle heavy rain and snowfall. Also characteristic are the delicate traceried porches or verandahs.Jacob Ross was one of many children born to Edmund Ross (second of the Ross brothers) and his wife, Ann Lawrence. The general geographical area became known as Rossville. Jacob and his wife Flora MacKinnon had ten children and distinguished themselves as generous and hospitable people who opened their home to anyone who needed their help.
The previous of the property is Ernest Laird Hart, a decendant of Irad Hart who was the first settler in the upper part of the Margaree Valley. He and his family played a prominent role in establishing the Northeast Margaree settlement as does the present family continue the tradition of hard work and service to the community and traveller. The present owner and innkeeper is the grandson of Mary and Ernest Laird Hart, Brooke Hart who continues the family tradition of hospitality and fine meals in the meticulous Heart of Harts Inn in NorthEast Margaree.
